Discover must-visit restaurants and culinary destinations in New York City, including brunch, fine dining, and local favorites for food-loving travelers.

Overview

As a NJ/NYC-based traveler and foodie, I’ve curated this list with a focus on neighborhood variety, diverse cuisines, and practical picks for different times of day. Think brunch in lively spots, dinner with a local vibe, and late-night bites that keep the city buzzing. Use this guide to quickly find places that fit your mood and schedule. You can combine neighborhoods smoothly for a full day out without backtracking too much. Whether you want a fancy dinner or casual eats, there’s something for every plan here. - Make reservations when possible, especially for dinners and popular brunch spots. - NYC tipping customs usually mean 15-20% for sit-down meals If you have dietary concerns like vegetarian preferences or allergies, I flag those where relevant, but I always suggest asking ahead to ensure your needs are met comfortably.

How to Get There

Navigating New York City’s restaurant scene is easiest by subway, taxi or ride-hail, and on foot when dining close by. The subway is the backbone for most trips—keep an eye on whether a train is local or express, which changes stop patterns. To avoid crowded conditions, steer clear of peak rush hours like early mornings and late afternoons. For late-night outings or when you’re in a group, ride-hail or taxis offer more direct routes, especially for quick cross-town trips where subways aren’t as convenient. They can save time and add comfort after a long day of eating and walking. Walking is a must for food crawls within neighborhoods, but wear comfortable shoes as distances between spots can add up. Plan your timing to avoid the midday heat or the chill of late evening, making your food exploration both enjoyable and manageable.

Must-Try Restaurants

Sveta's fusion of European flavors and gorgeous cocktails makes it a standout in the West Village. I always order their Chicken Kyiv which comes with smooth mashed potatoes. Occasionally I'll order their beef stroganoff which is super good and comforting on a cold winter evening! Sveta is considered one of the best girlie brunch spots and it's advisable to reserve a table in advance due to its popularity! Pair your meal with the 'Dove of Ukraine' cocktail, a unique blend of flavors that complements the dishes perfectly and is designed in honor of the owners Svetlana and Alan's homeland, Ukraine.

POIs

  • Sveta
  • Mareluna

Mareluna's modern Italian cuisine and chic ambiance make it a must-try in SoHo. It's very underrated, and you can't beat the prices! Most pasta dishes are under $30 and they have a great happy hour during the week and on Saturdays. Signature dishes include the Pappardelle with Duck Ragu and the Aragosta alla Rigatoni. The Aragosta alla Rigatoni (lobster pasta) is probably the best price you'll find in Manhattan that uses a lobster-bisque sauce and not tomato! Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are also accepted.

International Flavors

Bua Thai Ramen & Robata Grill uniquely blends Thai flavors with Japanese grilling techniques, offering a distinctive dining experience. For a satisfying meal, order the basil fried rice, crab rangoons, and vegetable dumplings. Pair your meal with a Thai iced tea or one of their fun cocktails for a refreshing complement! If you're new to Thai cuisine, don't hesitate to ask the staff for recommendations or guidance on spice levels. With a menu so popular and a cozy atmosphere, it's crowded on weekdays and weekends. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

Other Items

  • The Dicken's

Psaraki offers a rich selection of Greek and Mediterranean dishes, each crafted with authentic flavors. They have the best view of the Brooklyn Bridge that's also perfect for sunset with friends or a date night. The seafood is so fresh, and you must order their grilled branzino for a taste of Greece! Dishes are typically served family-style, so ordering a few to share is common. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends and over the summer.

The fungi pizza with truffle oil at Winnie's Broadway

Winnie's Broadway is a vibrant cocktail bar and restaurant in Midtown's Theater District, blending clubby energy with the best girlie vibes. It's a tropical oasis offering contemporary cuisine and exceptional hospitality. For a memorable evening, participate in their $30 bottomless dinner party that features unlimited drinks for 90min with the purchase of an entree!

Evening & Bar Scene

Oscar Wilde @ Christmas

Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite bars that I've been going to for years. Every season, they have new cocktails with seasonal decor and the vibes are always great here. The most popular times to visit are during October, November, and December for their Halloween and Christmas themes. Whether you're a New York local or are visiting for the holidays, add this spot to your list and definitely make a reservation, it's a must-visit!

Where to Stay

When I'm booking hotels for food-focused trips, walkability to great restaurants and easy transit access top my list. I prioritize proximity to subway lines for quick hops across neighborhoods, flexible late-check-out options, and properties that offer some dining onsite to cover early meals or snacks. I recommend booking an Arlo Hotels property, particularly their NoMad and Williamsburg locations! I love staying at Arlo Hotels and if you book with my promo code "**TRAVELINGSONIA**" you'll receive **up to 40% OFF** your stay. Each property includes: - Close to subway lines for easy neighborhood hopping - Late-checkout (depending on availability) for restful mornings after late nights - On-site dining for convenient early meals or quick bites

Conrad New York Downtown is perfect if you want to dive into the vibrant Lower Manhattan food scene. It’s a solid base for evening bar routes nearby with lots of cool spots within walking distance. The Kimberly Hotel situates you well for Midtown’s bustling dining options, making it a great morning brunch hub. It’s handy to confirm late checkout, especially if you’re pacing around brunch-heavy itineraries.
