How to Get There & Around
The main gateway for families arriving in Luang Prabang is Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ). It’s a small airport, making arrivals and departures straightforward, which is a relief when traveling with kids. From the airport, you can easily arrange a pre-booked transfer or grab a tuk-tuk to the town center, which is just a short ride away. For a more scenic and adventurous route, consider the slow boat from Thailand. It’s a long journey, taking about two days, so it’s best suited for families with older children who can handle the pace and enjoy the river views. Once in town, the main peninsula where most attractions are located is very walkable, making it easy to explore with children at a relaxed pace. For trips to places further out, like Kuang Si Waterfall, tuk-tuks are the go-to option. They’re easy to find and arrange on the spot, and drivers are familiar with the popular family-friendly sites. Getting around Luang Prabang with kids is manageable and flexible, whether on foot or by tuk-tuk, giving you freedom to tailor your days to your family’s rhythm.

Local Food & Markets
In Luang Prabang, evenings come alive with the bustling Night Market along Sisavangvong Road. As the sun sets, the street transforms into a vibrant hub, with vendors setting up stalls offering a variety of goods and local delicacies. The air is filled with enticing aromas of grilled meats, fresh fruits, and traditional Lao dishes, creating a sensory experience that's both exciting and family-friendly. For families, the Night Market is a treasure trove of culinary delights. Stalls line the streets, offering a variety of local dishes that are both delicious and approachable for children. Grilled chicken skewers, known as "ping gai," are a favorite among kids, offering tender meat with a smoky flavor. Sticky rice, a staple in Lao cuisine, is often served with fresh mango slices and a drizzle of coconut cream, making for a sweet treat that's both healthy and satisfying. Other popular dishes include "khao poun," a traditional Lao noodle soup, and "kaipen," crispy seaweed snacks seasoned with garlic and sesame. For a more immersive experience, consider visiting the morning market. This bustling market offers a sensory overload with its vibrant colors and fresh produce. It's an excellent opportunity to introduce children to the variety of fruits and vegetables unique to the region. The market is also a great place to pick up fresh ingredients if you're interested in cooking some Lao dishes at home. When navigating street food with children, it's important to prioritize safety. Opt for stalls that are busy, as high turnover often indicates freshness. Ensure that the food is cooked thoroughly and served hot. It's also advisable to carry hand sanitizers and wet wipes to maintain hygiene before eating. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy the rich flavors of Luang Prabang's street food scene with peace of mind. If eating in the night market is not your thing, I've included some of our favourite restaurants here as well.
