Palau Travel Guide: A Week of Diving, Culture & Pure Paradise

If I had to describe Palau in one word, it would be *magic*. It’s one of those rare places where the ocean feels more alive than anywhere else I’ve ever been, the culture is woven into daily life, and the people welcome you like family. And that’s saying something, because after travelling to over 50 countries, Palau has to be one of my absolute favourites! From the moment you land, you can tell how much they care about protecting their home. You literally have to sign the Palau Pledge in your passport, promising to look after the environment, and only reef-safe sunscreen is allowed. Seeing how healthy the coral reefs and marine life are here honestly gave me so much hope for our planet. This isn’t just a tropical getaway – it’s an adventure that also happens to be leading the way in eco-tourism. Whether you’re gliding through the Rock Islands on a kayak, diving into some of the most alive coral reefs in the world, or wandering through ancient cultural sites, every day here feels like a pinch-me moment. I was lucky enough to explore with the Palau tourism team, which meant I squeezed in so many once-in-a-lifetime experiences – diving, kayaking, snorkelling, scenic flights, traditional sailing, waterfalls, cultural tours, wood carving, glass blowing, night markets… even karaoke with locals! This guide is packed with all the highlights from my week – where I stayed, the tours I loved, the hidden gems, and the must-do experiences. I hope it helps you plan your own adventure. Getting to Palau has never been easier, especially for us Aussies! The new direct Qantas flight from Brisbane to Koror is an absolute game changer. Only six hours in the air (yep, about the same as Bali!), suddenly this pristine paradise feels a whole lot closer! ✈️ Direct Flights – 6 hours from Brisbane - **Qantas**: Weekly flights from Brisbane to Koror (Saturdays out, Sundays back). - **Nauru Airlines**: Also runs Brisbane–Koror flights mid-week. Both airlines take around six hours, so super easy to slot into a weekend or longer trip. 🛂 Arrival in Koror – quick & easy Aussies get a **30-day visa on arrival** (just make sure your passport is valid for at least six months). Customs is straightforward, but you’ll need proof of onward travel. 🚕 Getting around – 20 minutes by road Palau’s centre is less than half an hour from the airport. You can: - Pre-book a taxi (recommended, as they can be limited). - Hire a rental car at the airport if you want more freedom. 💡 Travel Tips - **Book early**: Flight prices can fluctuate, so look at flexible dates to find the best deal! - **Arrive in daylight**: The drive is easier, and the views are next-level. - **Bring reef-safe sunscreen**: It’s required here - and trust me, you’ll need it!

Palau offers some gorgeous accommodation options for every budget! I only stayed at the below two which were in such a great location (near the marina where all the diving tours are located), but just do some research online - I'm sure you'll find a great option for what you need! Sea Passion Hotel is a comfortable, well-located spot with its own private beach, while Palau Royal Resort is pure luxury with stunning rooms, amazing buffet breakfasts, and a location that makes exploring the island effortless.

One of the best ways to really connect with Palau is through its cultural events. Throughout the year, villages and communities come alive with music, dance, food, and storytelling - offering travellers a chance to experience traditions that have been passed down for generations. Here are some of the highlights: - **Independence Day (October 1st)** Palau’s biggest celebration! Expect colourful parades, traditional dance and music, plenty of food, and fireworks to round out the night. The whole country comes together to celebrate national pride. - **Olechotel Belau Fair (August/September/October)** This cultural fair is a feast for the senses - handicrafts, traditional performances, delicious food, and a real community atmosphere. It’s one of the best times to immerse yourself in everyday Palauan life. - **Bai Ra Ngesechelchu (August)** A unique celebration led by traditional leaders, with storytelling, dance, and music that bring ancient Palauan legends to life. - **PCC Trade Fair (September–November)** A smaller but really lovely event where locals showcase handmade crafts, produce, and products. A perfect spot to pick up authentic souvenirs and chat with artisans. **Tips for Attending:** - **Check dates:** They can change each year, so plan ahead. - **Dress respectfully:** Modest clothing is always appreciated. - **Tickets:** Some events are free, others may need tickets — check in advance. Whether it’s a big celebration or a small village gathering, these events are such a special way to experience Palau’s warmth, pride, and community spirit!
