Overview

If I had to describe Pohnpei in one word, it would be *untouched*!! It’s one of those rare places where waterfalls tumble straight from the jungle, ancient ruins feel like they’ve been frozen in time, and the people welcome you with a warmth that makes you feel instantly at home. And that’s saying something, because after travelling to over 50 countries, Pohnpei has to be one of the most unique and underrated gems I’ve ever visited! From the moment you land, you realise this isn’t a typical island getaway. Life here moves to the rhythm of nature - the reefs, the surf, the rivers, the rainforest. The balance between culture and environment is everywhere you look, and it’s what makes Pohnpei feel so special. This isn’t just a stopover, it’s an adventure. One day you’re exploring Nan Madol (the mysterious “Venice of the Pacific”), the next you’re hiking to hidden waterfalls, diving pristine reefs, or heading out to Ant Atoll - a UNESCO biosphere reserve so beautiful it doesn’t feel real. I was lucky enough to explore with the Pohnpei tourism team, which meant I got to see so much of what makes this place extraordinary - from cultural festivals and church services, to traditional crafts, surf breaks, diving spots, and even evenings spent eating, laughing, and sharing stories with locals. This guide is packed with the highlights from my trip - where I stayed, the tours I loved, the hidden gems, and the must-do experiences. I hope it helps you plan your own adventure. If Pohnpei isn’t already on your bucket list… trust me, it’s about to be!

How to Get There

Getting to Pohnpei is definitely part of the adventure - but it’s actually easier than you might think! I flew Qantas direct from Brisbane to Palau, then hopped on Nauru Airlines straight to Pohnpei in just under 4 hours. The only catch is that a lot of these flights leave at the crack of dawn (mine was at 5am!), so prepare for an early start. United Airlines also flies in via Guam as part of its legendary “Island Hopper” route, which is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, though usually a bit pricier. ✈️ **Flights – under 4 hours from Palau** - **Nauru Airlines:** Weekly flights from Koror to Pohnpei (early morning departures, around 5am). - **United Airlines:** Regular flights from Guam and other hubs, including the famous Island Hopper. 🛂 **Arrival in Pohnpei – smooth & simple** Aussies get a 30-day visa on arrival. Customs was quick and easy, but like anywhere in Micronesia, make sure your passport has at least six months’ validity and proof of onward travel. 🚕 **Getting around – 10–15 minutes to town** Kolonia (the main town) is super close to the airport. You can: - Organise a transfer through your hotel (easiest option). - Grab a taxi (have USD cash ready). - Rent a car if you want to explore waterfalls, Nan Madol, and the island’s south side at your own pace. 💡 **Travel Tips** - Pack snacks & water: Flights are long, early, and food options are limited. - Book early: Flight prices fluctuate! - Bring cash: USD is king here, and cards aren’t accepted everywhere.

Nature & Adventure

If you’re craving untouched nature and wild adventure, Pohnpei delivers it in spades!! Think lush jungle hikes that end in hidden waterfalls, glassy lagoons filled with manta rays, and surf breaks so pristine they’re world-famous. Every day here felt like stepping into a postcard — except better, because it’s real and you’re in it.

Where to Stay & Eat

Pohnpei might be small, but when it comes to where to stay and eat, it punches well above its weight. You’ll find everything from overwater stays with fresh sashimi bars to simple local spots serving the freshest tuna you’ll ever taste. Most hotels sit right on the lagoon, making it easy to slip between exploring and relaxing with a drink in hand.
