Overview
Imagine strolling along Istanbul's waterfront promenade on a crisp winter morning, the air fresh and invigorating, the historic skyline of domes and minarets in sharper focus. While not as busy as in summer, as long as it's not raining you'll still find just as many people wondering the vibrant streets, drinking hot tea and coffee in nearby cafés and activities in and outdoors. When I tell people I first visited Istanbul in the winter, they couldn't understand why, but in this guide, we'll delve into some key experiences that make Istanbul a captivating all year round destination. From shopping and dining, to museums and workshops, plus the beautiful walks along the Bosphorus promenade. These activities offer a unique glimpse into the city's rich culture and history, in a much quieter period of the year. For longer stays and remote work, winter in Istanbul feels especially liveable. Days move at a slightly slower pace, cafés welcome lingering, and it’s easier to fall into a routine rather than rushing between places. It’s the kind of season that encourages balance: work in the mornings, wandering in the afternoons, and unhurried evenings by the water. On longer stays, I naturally gravitate toward places I can return to easily, and over multiple visits, Galataport became one of those familiar anchor points, especially in winter. To make the most of this guide, follow the sections in order to experience a seamless journey through Istanbul's winter offerings. Each part is designed to build upon the previous, ensuring a cohesive and enriching adventure that goes beyond a traditional guide to the city. A couple of quick tips: dress in layers to stay comfortable against the wind, and check the opening hours of museums before your visit, as they may vary during the winter months. Expect cool temperatures ranging from 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F), with occasional rain and foggy conditions. The Bosphorus, the strait that runs through the city, breeze can make it feel colder than the actual temperature, so dressing in layers is advisable.
Top Things to Do in Winter
While much cooler in temperature, it's still possible to try most attractions and experiences when visiting Istanbul. In order to fully experience the city, it's good to go a little further than the typical recommended spots. These are a few of the things I recommend doing to really *experience* the city. **Enjoying a Turkish breakfast** An absolute must when you are in Istanbul. One of the things I love most about Istanbul is that food and drink are made to be savoured. A typical arrangement can be anything from fresh veg and cheese, to meats, eggs and an assortment of hot dishes and spreads. And of course Turkish tea, sometimes with limitless refills. One of my favourite places was Doğacıyız Gourmet Breakfast Restaurant. **Learning to make a Turkish coffee** "You cannot believe a (coffee) reading, but you cannot leave without one". There is a lot that can be said in how a coffee is made, from the hospitality of a restaurant to how much your fiancé loves you...! And so not only do I recommend trying a Turkish coffee, but it's also worth booking a workshop to understand how to do coffee readings. But make sure you never read your own! **Galataport** Located on the water front, it's both a cruise ship port and cultural space of restaurants, shops and the Museum of Modern Art. When I wasn't enjoying one of the many restaurants, even the terraces in winter, I loved wandering into the shops where they would sometimes have pop-up events with different organisations and DJs. During longer stays, it became a place I’d return to without much planning, after a morning of work, for a walk along the water, or to warm up indoors on colder days. Having restaurants, shops, and cultural spaces all in one walkable area made winter days feel easy rather than over-scheduled. I also loved going to MoMA on the chillier days to enjoy the exhibitions and the cafe, an easy way to step away from work for a few hours without feeling like I was sightseeing at full pace. Always check seasonal opening hours and possible winter closures on official museum websites before your visit to avoid surprises. The promenade is of course also great just for the beautiful sites on the walk. **Sunset at a terrace restaurant** And speaking of views and restaurant terraces, sunsets for me seem a lot more breathtaking in winter. There are many terrace restaurants to choose from, but one of my favourites was Galata Konak Cafe. Grab a hot beverage and maybe enjoy some dessert along with spectacular views of the city as the sun goes down. Moments like this became part of the rhythm of my stay, both alone and with company. Simple, repeatable, and easy to fit around workdays.

Where to Stay
Istanbul is made up of many neighbourhoods, each with its own character and rhythm. These are the three areas I’ve stayed in and would recommend for first-timers, whether you’re visiting for a shorter trip or settling in for a longer stay.
- Beyoğlu: well suited for first stays and central exploring
- Moda: better for a slower, more local pace
- Kadıköy: a good balance for remote work and everyday life
Conclusion
Winter in Istanbul isn’t about seeing everything at once. It’s about slowing down, finding a rhythm, and letting the city reveal itself gradually. With fewer crowds, cooler days, and places like Galataport naturally fitting into daily routines, it’s a season that feels especially suited to longer stays.
