How to Get There
Arriving in Istanbul, you'll likely land at Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW). If arriving at IST, the main airport - the easiest and cheapest way into the city is using the metro. Buy an Istanbulkart from the machines, put 300 Lira on it, tap and away you go. You can get close to either Taksim or Sultanahemt - the two main areas most people choose to stay near. 300 Lira should last your 2-3 days of hopping on and off public transport. Other simple ways to reach central areas like Sultanahmet and Beşiktaş are by taxi or shuttle bus. Taxis are readily available outside the terminals; ensure the driver uses the meter. Shuttle buses offer a cost-effective alternative, with routes connecting major districts. Note though you'll still either need to walk or catch the tram to get closer to your hotel. We did the shittle to Sultanahmet on our first arrival. It was about $10 each. Once in the city, the Istanbulkart is your best friend for public transport. This rechargeable smart card grants access to buses, trams, metros, and ferries. You can purchase one at airport kiosks, major metro stations, or convenience stores. Children under 6 travel free, making it ideal for families. Navigating Istanbul's public transport is straightforward. Metro and tram stations are clearly marked with the "M" symbol. For ferry rides across the Bosphorus, head to terminals like Eminönü or Karaköy. Ferries offer scenic views and are part of the public transport system, so your Istanbulkart works here too. The ferries are an experience of themselves and can take you to Ortakoy or over to Asia - and the views from the water are something else. Be mindful of peak hours, typically 7:30–9:30 AM and 5:00–7:30 PM on weekdays, when public transport can be crowded. To avoid this, plan your travel during mid-morning or after dinner. For families with strollers, modern trams and metros are accessible, featuring elevators and level boarding. Ferries also have flat, open decks suitable for strollers. However, buses can be crowded and may lack space for prams. In Sultanahmet, many attractions are within walking distance, so comfortable shoes are a must. Stay hydrated, especially during the summer months, as water fountains are scarce. Convenience stores and kiosks sell bottled water throughout the city.

I shot this video from the 4th story of the 4th story of the Odessa Restaurant whilst having a beer. You would expect a place with this location to really gauge the tourist dollar but I think it was actually the cheapest price I paid for a beer and it came with one of the world's great vistas for free. Had some great mezze here too because we didn't want to leave the view.
